Right outer ankle

Question
The other day I was squatting down and then stood up with out holding onto anything for support.  My right ankle clicked and started to hurt.  It's not swollen, but I cannot rotate my ankle or bend it without the clicking and pain.  I can walk on it, when I keep it perfectly straight and walk it's okay.  It's just the other times where it really hurts.

Did I sprain it?

Oh, I want to add I'm very much outta shape.  I've had 2 kids the past 2 years and gained a total of 60 pounds in 2 years.  I was just about to join Curves, and I'm not sure if I should wait until my ankle is better or not.  It hasn't gotten worse, but not any better either.  It's been 3 days so far.

Answer
Hey Dawn

Definitely join Curves. Be sure to tell them about your sore ankle. You sprained a muscle in your ankle. The reason for the sprain is the weight you are pushing down on your ankles. When you stand straight, the bones hold you up, twist or turn to either side, your muscles are holding the weight. Just do the exercises at curves slowly until your muscles in your ankles get stronger again.

Be sure to do stretching exercises each day. You can do them at home in your kitchen.

Stand at the counter top, hands on the counter top. Put one foot back, firmly on the floor. Move your body forward, stretching the calf of the foot set back. Do 10 times, then do the other foot. Do it slowly and firmly. Do every day.

Standing at the counter top, hands on the counter top for balance, squat down slowly and go up slowly. Again 10 times. Do each day.

Doing no exercises will only make your ankle heal slower.

When doing any exercise, when it hurts, pause, rest, and resume. Listen to your body.

Hope you feel better. Write again if you have more questions.
