Black Toenail Spots

Question
Dear David,

I took my nail polish off today when I noticed both of my big toes have black spots under the nail in the inside corner. What could this be? I have been researching black nails which are usually caused by trauma or exercise of which I have neither problems. And then I saw the black color could indicate melanoma, which alarmed me. Is it possible to have something wrong on both feet in the same place or could this be caused by uncomfortable shoes? I live in NYC therefore, I'm always walking. Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hello Kim

Black nails is usually brusing. Since you said no trama or exercise, I would figure that your blood pressure is a bit low. So even walking would cause brusing. If the the top of the shoe is sewn so it pushes down on the nails with every step, that would be a cause too. If you are wearing sandals, then that would not be it.

I would recommend you go to a podiatrist to have them check, just to be sure. May even be an infection.

Hope you are ok and everything is well with you.
