-----Question-----
My son, almost 18 months old, has has unusual growth of both his toenails on his big toes.  They seem to grow very flat ( almost too flat) at the base of his toe and then the nail begins to lift and curl upward towards the top of the toe - they break very unevenly and frequently.  I have a suspicion that he curls his toes when they are in his shoes and walks with the toes bent inward. ( I've tried to feel the toe area when the shoes are on and I think they are curled up) - Does he curl them because it is painful to be in shoes with the big toenails sticking up ?  or are the toenails sticking up because he walks this way? - I'm un certain, but wondered if there is there any way to stop this so his nails can grow normally.  Is there something to put inside the shoes or an exercise we can do to make him walk correctly ?  Any advise would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks

-----Answer-----
Dawn,

Some children are born with deformed nails.  Also, there may be a deformity of the bone or tendon in the toe that may require treatment.  Generally, the earlier you treat these problems the better the result.
It is difficult for me to understand the actual condition without an exam.
My recommendation would be to see a Podiatrist that treats toddlers.
