Burning, tingling feet

Question
Both of my feet have been tingling and burning on the outsides and balls of feet for about 2 weeks.  I have done nothing new other than going back to lecturing each day for 3-4 hours (standing on my feet).  The feeling typically goes away in flip-flops.  Why would this be and should I be concerned?  Could stretching help?  Orthotics would take how long to see a difference? I never had any foot problems before.

Answer
Hi Bryan,

It is not uncommon to have burning or tingling of the feet with standing since your foot has not had this stress in a while.  This is especially true if you are wearing closed shoes.

The first thing you need to do is check your shoes and consider a new different type of shoe.  Typically a running shoe is supportive with some cushion.  In some cases your shoes simply may be worn or tight.

Usually orthotic inserts take about a month to judge whether they will resolve your pain.  Stretching may be helpful if done gradually.

If the problem persists after these simple measures, I would see a Podiatrist.  You may have a neuroma or other condition that is causing your problem.
