Question
I was dx with plantar fasciitis about four years ago.  I tried stretching, night splints, cortisone injection, taping, immobilization, pt, custom orthotics and good shoes and ESWT to no avail.  After living with symptoms for three years, I had two rounds of cryo which has resulted in a dramatic decrease in symptoms. Although my symptoms are now mostly well controlled, an ultrasound performed 7 months ago for Posterior tibial tendonitis/accessory navicular indicated that the fascia is still extremely thick (7.5). Could the fascia continue to become irritated and thickened could it eventually rupture?

Answer
Hi Amy,

Cryosurgery rarely has any effect on the fascia.  In my practice, the cryosurgery is used to kill the nerves that are injured or compressed and associated with heel pain.  The treatment is not designed for the fascia.  Orthotics and support are needed in addition to the cryo for longer term relief.  So if the fascia is enlarged and you feel well I would not be concerned.  I'm glad that the cryosurgery has worked well and given you relief.

Sincerely,
