Question
In a crazy home accident, I got my foot caught under a heavy piece of furniture and in a panic I pulled my foot from under the sofa snd in doing so completely tore off the nail on my big toe. Lots of bleeding and now pain and swelling. I'm keeping toe in ice but question what else I should be doing.

Answer
PRICE
Protect-wear a sandal or shoe
Rest
Ice-for 3 days
Compress-Mild pressure
Elevate-if it throbs

Apply antibiotic ointment daily and gauze-not a Band-Aid-unless fabric. Needs to allow moisture to escape.
You will get a callus where the nail grows and a then new nail in 6-8 months.
See a podiatrist if the growth doesn't look normal or if the area appears infected.
Hope this helps
Good Luck!
