Ankle Sprain?

Question
QUESTION: Yesterday I was playing football, I was tackled by two guys, one in the front and back. My ankle was twisted somewhat. The pain that I had then was as if someone took a hammer to my ankle, there was an intense pressure and sharp pain. I have a bad history with my ankles minorly spraining both of them.

A. Do you think this is just an average sprain?
B. Is there any particular precaution I can take to prevent these?

Thanks

ANSWER: Whenever a sprain is coupled with a contact injury, such as while being tackled, you must assume it is worse than usual.  It is essential that you get this checked by a podiatrist and have an x-ray taken.  In the future, wearing an ankle brace (there are many different styles and also custom vs. generic) will help prevent such injuries in the future.

QUESTION: I hate to take more of your time, but I just would like to know, the pain I have is on either side of my foot right below the ankle bone, is that of any significance?

Answer
Tendons course on both sides.  Again, I suspect this is a tendinitis and must be addressed by your podiatrist.
