burning, stabbing pain on outside of my foot

Question
I feel like the outside edge ( from the edge to about an inch inwards) of my right foot from the heel all the way to the toe is on fire, the pain is constant, although more of a throbbing when I'm "off my feet", and like  it is on fire and stabbing when weight bearing .  I haven't done any unusual exercise and it doesn't seem  to be getting any better with ice, or anti-inflamatory cream.....do you have any ideas where I should go with this ?? ( oh, there appears to be no significant swelling or bruising visible)
thanks in advance, Jenny

Answer
Hi Jenny,

I would see a Podiatrist and have an x-ray to make sure there is no metatarsal stress fracture or bone abnormality of the foot.  Stress fractures can occur with normal activity, however, there is usually swelling.
It sounds like you may have irritation of the nerve that supplies the side of the foot.  Also, several tendons run along that course.
You may require a cortisone injection for relief.
In some cases, I would consider an MRI if there is no relief.

Hope that helps.
