Question
I know sounds crazy but feels like a hair or something is wrapped around the base of my big toe but nothing is their. Is really driving me crazy, any ideas?

Answer
Hi Stephanie,

This odd sensation in the toe can be the result of swelling of the joint or may be due to an irritated nerve in the foot.  Do you have any more information that you can provide?  I've had patients with diabetes and autoimmune diseases that have this sensation, however, this can occur in a perfectly healthy person.  I've also seen this in runners and people that wear tight shoes.

Sorry, I can't give you a definite diagnosis.  If the problem continues or there is sudden increase in pain or toe discoloration, I would see a podiatrist.

Sincerely,
