Question
Hi,

I had an accident 14 weeks ago where I broke both my ankles at the fibula and my left heel (the foot was also dislocated). I had an operation with plate put in on the left ankle. Both ankles and my heel are now on the mend. However I still can not walk with out a limp and often still use a crutch. The problem is with the toes on the left foot as they will not flatten out, nor can I lift them, although I can curl them in.
I think it is either the Extensor and Flexor tendons that have the problem.

Can you help identify my problem and suggest what I can do to fix it?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Johnny,

You likely strained or tore some of the extensor or flexor tendons to the toes.  With your injury you will likely have deformities, weakness and pain for many months to come.  You also have a strong chance of developing arthritis and chronic ache in the ankles.  Physical therapy would be very important and I would see a podiatrist for an opinion.

Good Luck.

Sincerely,
