Question
I am an 48 year old female weighing 265+. I have had high bp for years and do not consistently take meds for it.  I have been having on ongoing problem with my left foot.  It doesn't seem to want to work upon standing (numbness and then throbbing) and I am now receiving a burning/stabbing sensation on the right side of the left foot.  It is occurring all the time now.  My question is do I need to see a primary doctor to question diabetic neuropathy problems or a podiatrist?  My neurologist doesn't seem to think there is a problem like a pinched nerve.  As it is getting worse, I feel I should seek medical advice but don't know which direction to take.

Answer
Hi Kendra,

I would see a podiatrist because it sounds more like a localized foot problem.  The pressure placed on your feet is likely leading to deformity and compression of the foot nerves. It may not be diabetes but in time if you don't control your weight and blood pressure you are at high risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Considering your age, weight and hypertension, you should be seeing your primary doctor on a regular basis.  So you need to see both doctors.
