Question
Dear Doctor,
Last night i had a sudden numbness in my right hand whilst i was asleep. Although the hand was in proper position. It felt as if  the hand would fall off and i woke with  a start. I was alright after a minute or so.
Im 30/f And im scared to death whether it could be a stroke or something.

Answer
I wouldn't jump to any conclusions just yet. There are a number of potential causes for the sudden onset of numbness in the wrist and hand. You may have pinched or irritated a nerve in your neck, in your elbow, or your wrist. Many people sleep with their hands flexed underneath the pillow or neck. This position can cause compression of the median nerve giving you carpal tunnel symptoms.

Numbness in the hands is just one of the few signs of a stroke. If you can smile, raise both arms, stand steady on both feet with your eyes closed, speak a simple sentence with several vowels that run together (simple Simon says?), and stick out your tongue out, then you probably do not have to worry about a stroke.

In any case, as I always do, I would still suggest you have it evaluated by a physician.
