Question
i just recently cracked my upper back and neck by pulling my head forward. it felt like something tore in my spine between my shoulder blades and now it is constantly burning and when i try to move, the pain is unbearable.  do you have any advice on what may have happened or how to treat it?

Answer

Hanna Somatic Educatio
Hello, Dan.

Your need to crack your upper back and neck indicates that you had tight muscles that caused you discomfort.

The strong stretch you gave yourself put those muscles into spasm.

To clear up the problem, you need to free the spasm.

Please see
http://somatics.com/back_pain_terms.htm

and select "Back Injury vs. Muscle Spasms"

Please also see the video at
http://somatics.com/back_pain.htm

and do the exercise shown.  It's not a stretch, but a control-developing exercise over those muscles.
