Question
For the past week I have been hearing a squeeking noise coming from my skull above my left ear. When I turn my head a a certain angle I can hear slight crackles and then a creaking sound as I rotated me head to the left. It is a creepy noise! I don't have any pain associated with it. I went to the Dr. and she said maybe get a head massage. Just wondering what this might be. It sounds like it is joint rubbing together. I did have a jaw ache the week before. Help, the sound is annoying me.

Answer
Sorry, but without a proper exam I can not give you an accurate explanation.  There are a couple of things it could be.  I don't know what "Dr." you went to, but I am guessing it wasn't a chiropractor.  A joint could be rubbing together, whether it is your TMJ or your neck or even you skull.  Most likely your Occiput (the base of the skull) is "grinding" on the first vertebrae.  The best advise I can give it to see a chiropractor.  If you don't see one already and you are interested, go to www.sorsi.com to locate a doctor near you.  The problem you are having could also be cranial, and these doctors specialize in such matters.  I am a member of this group and would trust any one of them with my own family.  I am located in St. Paul, Minnesota and would be more than happy to see you.  If you have any other questions or concerns, please email me.
