ankle injury/swelling

Question
About 4-6 weeks ago I twisted my ankle.  I put ice on it for about 12 hours and it was fine after that.  Recently it has been swelling and getting painful.  The pain and swelling is primarily on the outside of the leg,(vs. the inseam)going all around to the achilles tendon which is also somewhat sore. I don't think I have had a second injury, but I find myself often sitting with my foot arched, toes pointed down like a ballerina. Maybe I have just strained it?  I've put some ice on it and kept it elevated for one whole day, but that hasn't seemed to help much.  Any other suggestions?  Perhaps a support bandage?
Thank you!

Answer
Angie,

For the short term, you can get an ankle brace at a surgical supply store.

However, I would recommend that you see a Podiatrist for x-rays and treatment for your ankle injury.  You may have torn soft tissue or ligaments around the ankle or you might have fractured a bone.

At times an MRI may be needed.  Also, you may benefit from physical therapy.

Hope all goes well.
