Question

MRI 2005/2008
In 2005 I was diagnosed with stage III avascular necrosis of my right talus.  Since then, I've had two additional MRI's (2008 and 2010) which confirmed a talar osteochondral lesion and avascular necrosis.  Each was reviewed by a different radiologist.

I had surgery this morning for the treatment of AVN.  The surgeon says that there was a great deal of impingement, which he cleaned up, but that he was unable to locate the AVN.

Is it possible that the impingement manifested similarly to AVN on the MRI, or that, while being present on the MRI, isn't sufficiently problematic to be surgically identifiable?

Thanks!

Answer
Dear Brian,

This Chicago, South Loop & Elmhurst Podiatrist of AnklenfootCenters.com says.......

The AVN of your talus that they were talking about is also know as as osteochondral lesion. Sometimes they heal & sometimes they don't hurt.
If they hurt they are treated surgically.
If you have doubts seek a second opinion from a podiatrist who is Board Certified in foot & ANKLE surgery and bring all films-more important than reports.
Impingement can definitely cause AVN of your talus.
Find out they cause of your impingement-are you over weight, does your foot lean in at the ankle ,etc and try to eliminate those causes even if you are not having pain, to prevent re-occurrence

Hope this Helps &
Good Luck!
