Question
QUESTION: i just got this serious sharp pain that i cant stand in my ankle. and they have been thinking about doing surgery cuz of bone cysts in my ankle and cutting half the bone out if i need surgery. saying ill be on crutches for three months about. but i was wondering could this sharp pain be a sign of the cysts growing or jsut pain from an injury two years ago i still have problems with which is another reason for possible surgery. I have Diabetes and other medical problems i don't know what they are but my injury to the ankle was a baseball bat getting thrown at my ankle.

ANSWER: Hi Bambi,

I'm assuming that you've had an MRI???

Have you tried any other treatments?

If you have a cyst or injury to the cartilage inside the ankle, I would consider finding a dr that does arthroscopic ankle procedures.  They may be able to repair the ankle without a major surgery.

QUESTION: Yes I have had an MRI and numerous x-rays. I have also had a bone scan. The bone scan said I had thinning cartilage but said nothing else about the cysts or anything. The only treatment I've had is physical therapy 2 sessions to try and streghten my ankle back to normal as much as I can. I was seeing an orthropediac who then sent me to a foot and ankle surgeon.

Answer
Hi Bambi,

I would consider finding a dr that does the small incision ankle surgery known as arthroscopic surgery.  They may be able to improve your joint without doing any major surgery.  I believe that the physical therapy is a good idea.
