Sprained Ankle?

Question
Hello. I recently began rehearsals for the school musical at my high school. My character is a ballet dancer. Now I personally have severe flat feet and have not taken ballet since I was 3. I'm not "en pointe" but I am doing alot of turns and things of that sort. A couple of days ago, I started feeling discomfort in my right ankle. My right ankle is so flat footed that the ankle itself sits inward because there is no arch to hold it straight. I can move my foot up and down, but not side to side. It is slightly swollen, and there isn't any obvious bruising. What is wrong with it? Is it a mild sprain? I just got an ankle brace today and I elevate it and put ice on it at home. But the ballet part I cannot avoid. I have rehearsals everyday and the opening night is next week. So I can't stay off of it all the time, I have to dance. What's wrong with it? And what do I need to do?

Answer
Hi Angel,

You have likely overused the muscles and tendons that support the ankle joint.  This would be considered an ankle sprain.  The ankle support is a good idea and I would ice the area and try some advil if you are not allergic.  However the best answer is decrease the activity.  If the area worsens, I would see a podiatrist.
