Question
I had surgery on 2-14-07 and still have pain. I had a long recovery and the had a stress fracture below the second toe. The Dr I went to for shoes  inserts said I will probably always have some pain and are at risk for more fractures. I am worse off the before surgery. Help what can i do?

Answer
Hi Jean,

A stress fracture after bunion surgery can happen.  However, the fracture should have healed without any problems or pain.  Whenever you have a bunion surgery you take on the risk of possibly having more pain than before the surgery.  This is usually discussed prior to the procedure and mentioned in the consent forms that you signed.

With that being said you need to find another Dr that can identify the source of your pain and look at having some treatments and possibly physical therapy.

I have a number of patients that come in after a bunion with chronic pain from irritated or entrapped nerves.  I will often attempt some cortisone injections, orthotics and physical therapy.  If there is still pain, I will consider a procedure known as cryosurgery.  This technique provides long-term pain relief.  See my site:  www.tampacryosurgery.com for more details.

Good Luck.

Sincerely,
