Question
Dr,
I had a triple athrodesis in 1987 in my left foot due to a "bone crushing injury"...I have noticed over the years that the top of left foot is larger than my right foot... I would assume that is scar tissue and athritis...I have been experincing significant pain in that angle recently, particularly after sitting for a period of time(I have a desk job)...I have a noticible gait in walking and always have since the surgery...Have you ever heard of complications with the angle with this surgery? If so, What would you recommend my next course of action would be?...Thanks

Answer
Hi Mark,

After a triple arthrodesis of the foot, there is often pain that eventually develops in the ankle.  Since many of the major foot joints have been fused, the stress from the foot is often transferred to the ankle.  This can ultimately cause pain and even arthritis of the ankle.

I would see a podiatrist for an exam and an evaluation of the fusion sites.  You may benefit from orthotic devices or a custom ankle brace.  In some cases an anti-inflammatory and physical therapy may be helpful.

Good Luck.

Sincerely,
