Metatarsal stress fracture

Question
Last month I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in one metatarsal bone on my left foot.  I obtained this injury solely from walking to work and back (hour and a half of walking a day).  I feel I am almost completely healed with little to no pain anymore.  I was wearing cheap Vans slip on shoes which the doctor called "unsuitable for that amount of walking".  I wanted to know what steps I can take to make sure It doesn't happen again.  I am active in outdoor activities and value walking.  I would appreciate your advice.  Thanks.
Zack

Answer
Hi Zack,

For walking distances, I would look at walking shoes.  Consider checking out a New Balance walking shoe but try others to see what fits best.  I would also do some basic stretches on a regular basis.  Make sure to wear socks.
