Ankle & Knee Pain

Question
I work out regularly (4-5 times per week), play tennis, bike, etc.  Lately, I have had unexplained pain in my ankles and knees throughout the door....more often when I am not active and just sitting at my desk.  A running specialist informed me that I supinate on one foot and pronate on another foot.  Also, I feel I have some ankle instability (they are very skinny) since I easily turn them but luckily have not experienced any sprains -- although I did have a hamstring injury this summer.  Would a podiatrist be able to check my gait and find out why I have this underlying pain?  Could this be caused by my different foot positions as well as having drop foot after surgery years ago?  I am 51 and in very good physical condition with the exception of these odd pains.

Answer
Yes Karen, a Podiatrist can examine you and observe your gait to see if there are problems.

Some Podiatrists have gait analysis devices that give a computer print out and evaluation of your gait and motion.

I would imagine that due to your various foot problems and the drop foot your gait is abnormal and your instability will lead to foot, leg and knee pain.

Orthotic devices may be helpful.  Some are for the feet and others are customized for the foot and ankle.
