Question
Very weird- have had this clicking and feels like something gets stuck for a second then pain just anterior to my ankle left lateral foot which does not last long but since it seems to be happening with increasing frequency it is a bit bothersome. It also seems to give way but can't quite figure out where the weakness is coming from because at the same time my inner ankle seems to weaken as well. Just the left. Also am pronator flat footed and wear orthotics. No injury preceded this symptom I have had several bouts of bil pf(thank God for steroids!!) thanks for your concern.

Answer
Hi Jo Ann,

There are several possible reasons for ankle clicking or locking.  In some cases it may just be the fluid in your ankle being excessive and causing the click.  There are instances where there may be tendons that are unstable and pop out of place briefly and cause the sensation that you describe.  The tendons are known as the Peroneal tendons. Other tendon problems include a weak posterior tibial tendon leading to a condition known as posterior tibial tendon dysfunction.

Other causes may involve a piece of cartilage chipped in the ankle joint.  This usually occurs after an injury and is known as Osteochondritis dessicans or a talar dome lesion.

In any case, I would see a Podiatrist for an x-ray and possible MRI.  Usually if you have custom orthotic devices or ankle foot orthoses made, this will help.

Hope that helps.
