Injured foot nerve

Question
Aloha,
About 2 weeks ago a wind gust blew a 30lb board down and I happened to be walking by just at that moment and it landed on the top of my left foot.  Oh boy did that hurt!!  I iced it right away and kept it elevated.  For 2 hours I had sharp shooting pains in my foot from all directions.  Then my husband poked around on it and it felt better as if he opened up some blockage in the nerves or something.  So I was able to walk around and of course I over did-it because it was swollen again that night.  Anyway, now 2 weeks later the pain is progressively getting better and it's not black and blue, however, I still feel tingling and a little numbness on the top right side of my foot and into my big toe.  My question finally is, do you think there is going to be any permanent damage or will it heal completely?  And is there anything I should do to help it?  I have not seen a doctor or podiatrist.
Mahalo Nui Loa,
Adrienne

Answer
Hi Adrienne,

If the are worsens I would see a podiatrist.  It is likely a soft tissue problem but a fracture is still a possibility.

As far as the nerve in the foot, crush injuries certainly damage nerves.  They will typically heal over time if you ice the area and do some light stretching and motion exercises gently.  The process can be slow and can take several months

If you do continue to have pain, neuroablation or cryosurgery works well for nerve pain in the foot.

Good Luck.
