Ankle Brusing

Question
Hi,
The other day at track a friend of mine noticed bruising on my ankles. They are on each ankle, in the joint area, and about the size of a silver dollar. THey are both a light purpleish pink color and do not hurt when I touch them.
I have had no injury to that area and have never had complaints from running pains. So I don't think I bumped into something. My friend suggested that I may have slightly low levels of vitamin k, which is involved in blood clotting and bruising. Any ideas on this theory?

Answer
Hard to say without seeing, but if it is only your ankles, it is unlikely it is a vitamin issue.  Since it's on both ankles, it's possible your shoes can be hitting a particular area, causing discoloration or bruising.  Simply having some friction can cause it.

If you are concerned, I suggest you visit with a podiatrist.
All the best,
Andrew Schneider, DPM
