Question
Hi there, had hind foot debridment and something with the tibia cartilage on
Dec 16,08.  Prior had tarsal coalition correct 20+ years ago.  Still have a
lingering large bar that was not attempted to correct.  Feb 10 developed
cellulitis on an already well healed scar.  5 days of IV meds cefle...something
and then 2 weeks of 500mg QID Keflex. 2 days ago developed more local red
spots and if picked puss will come out!  Twice I have gotten little slivers out
of the scar, most likely dissolvable stitches that I reacted to.  Now I imagine
it's stitch abscess and not sure what the next step is.  Ortho surg suggested 2
weeks ago if not better in two weeks- tomorrow that he will take me back
under the knife.  So not interested as athlete and young mom of 2 small kids.
Any other ideas?  I'm scared of a super bug if i'm still creating infection when
on antibiotics......pls help

Answer
Hi Taunya,

If there is still an infection, the area must be opened, cleaned out and drained.  It is very important to not let this linger. It is also important that this doctor gets cultures of the deep tissues. At this point I would do an MRI to see if there is bone infection or deep abscess.  I would seek another opinion and find a more aggressive doctor if this isn't getting better.
