Right big toe went numb and tingly after long distance running/walking

Question
For the past 4 months or so I have been training for a marathon. On Saturdays, our group usually meets for long distance runs/walks. I've noticed the last few weeks that there have been times where my right big toe would feel a tingly/stinging feeling. I usually try to shake it off or wiggle my feet to get rid of the tingly/stinging feeling. However, the other day when I walked 5 miles in the morning, I noticed it tingling again and realized that it was numb as well. A day later and it is still numb. What is this and what can I do to fix it and prevent it?

Answer
Hi Caroline,

The numbness and tingling of the big toe is a common problem in runners.  There are usually no worrisome side effects from this sensation.  There is repetitive rubbing of the shoes against the toe.  This compresses the nerve to the toe and will result in these symptoms.  You can get moleskin or a gel pad that is thin and place it over the area to prevent friction.
