Question
I'm only 23 but since I was about 16 I started to get bad cramps in my feet. About 6 months after that started it moved to my second and third toe on my left foot. I can feel the foot cramp coming on and within 30 seconds my second and third toe split apart and is extremely painful. I have to hold the two toes together until it's over (about 3 minutes) or the pain is unbearable. This happens about once a month. Can you explain what may be happening and some preventative care?

Answer
This Chicago Podiatrist, Elmhurst Podiatrist & South Loop Podiatrist says.......

Dear Sarah,
For your foot cramps----
Please see a Podiatrist who is Board Certified in Orthopedics. They will be able to tell you if possibly a custom orthotic may help you. In the meantime make sure that you drink at least 8 eight once glasses of water daily.
Make sure that your diet contains sodium, calcium and potassium in appropriate amounts daily(easy to internet search)and eat the foods that you like in those groups---for example, tomatoes, bananas. Stretch your foot up and down, and in a circle and bend your toes up & down at the ball of the foot daily for a few minutes-especially before and after activities.

Good Luck!
