Question
Hi Dr. Katz,
I have never had previous foot problems but I have developed what I would call mild-to-moderate tailor's bunions over the last few years.  They don't hurt, but they sure are ugly!  I usually wear comfortable shoes except for special occasions, but I think I got them from those pointy-toed flats that were everywhere a few years ago.  I thought they were safe and healthy (they were comfortable) or I wouldn't have worn them every day!
Anyway, corrective surgery is out of the question.  I have tried those rubber toe stretchers (PedEggs) and they're nice but certainly not the dramatic fix I was hoping for.  Based on internet articles I've read, those night splints will help a lot, and can be purchased cheaply and easily online.  But I'm having a problem:  After hours of searching, the only splints I've found are for regular bunions, not tailor's bunions.  Where can I get some of these cheap, readily available Internet night splints???  If you have any other advice, it would be welcome.
Thank you for taking your time with my question.

Answer
Hi Sally,

Most night splints are for regular bunions and they are unable to correct the deformity. The main force that causes the deformity is standing and walking.  The only dramatic fix will be surgery.  This is a bone deformity with some soft tissue involvement. You could consider orthotics to slow the progression of the deformity.
