Question
I broke my left ankle in several places on 10/06 , which required surgery and pins and screws put in. I have been in physio since Feb. (on the doctor's ok, as the bones had healed) but after very slight exertion (a walk over 20 mins., mowing the lawn etc) the ankle REALLY aches. It's not  really swollen (altho the scars are still healing)and I do wear a  good brace for activities. When can I hope this pain will go away? (Is it muscle and tendon related?) What should I do?   Thank you

Answer
Hi A. Marie,

Unfortunately, after such a severe injury you will not only break the bone but will also tear many of the soft tissues.  The soft tissues usually take in excess of a year to completely heal.  In some cases, you will never have complete relief from your pain.  The ankle joint is really never the same even with a perfect correction.

It may be helpful to be on anti-inflammatory medication.  Sometimes a custom brace will give you better support.

Sorry that I can't give you more positive information, however you should stick with the therapy.  You should also do home strengthening exercise.  Be persistent and you should improve.

Good luck.

Sincerely,
