Question
Hi

My question is can diabetes cause you to break bone in your foot?

The reason I ask because,I've been working in a plant where I was one of two woman that worked there. My feet are a size 6 and the job kept on giving me a size 8 steeled toe boots. I work on conrete floors lifting steel joist/girdle.
When I kept have foot pain that was unbarable, the first doctor I went to told me I had fracture my foot. After trying to get worker compensation to help me out why I'm out of work the send me to the doctor and specialist that told me that the pain no after a year is not nerve pain but from diabetes. Which I didn't get dianogse until this year after sitting home because my feet seem not to heal. Is it possible that haven worn to big of a shoe made my injury this way or (fracture foot/nerve pain in foot) or the fact I'm non insulin type 2 diabetic?

Answer
Hi Monique,

I cannot give you any opinions with regard to workers compensation
or if your employer caused your injury.
When anyone works on their feet they run the risk of foot injury and even fracture. That's the nature of certain jobs.

Anyone can get a fracture in similar situations regardless of having diabetes.  However, there is a condition known as Charcot foot that is associated with diabetes and other conditions that cause nerve damage.  This can lead to fractures and dislocations of the foot and ankle.

My suggestion would be to make sure that your diabetes is under excellent control at all times.  If you smoke that would be a reason to have a higher risk of fractures or poor healing, so that would need to be stopped.  See a podiatrist for treatment.  It would be best to get treatment and get active again.
