Big toe was stepped on

Question
I had my big toe stepped on in a soccer game one week ago.  The toe nail is still attached, but the color is purpleish under the toenail.  When I walk around it continues to puss and sometimes bleed.  Should I take a hot needle and make a hole in the top on my nail to let out some of the puss?  Or what do you suggest?  I need to get back be ready to play right now.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Jordan,

I would recommend that you see a Podiatrist.

If the area under the nail is purple you may lose the nail.  I do not recommend using a needle.

If there is pus coming out you may need antibiotics.  Also, an x-ray is needed to check for a fracture.  If you have a fracture of the toe and an infection you could potentially get a bone infection which is very serious.

You may need to get back to soccer immediately but your health is more important.  Not properely treating a toe injury could lead to complications.

Good Luck and Happy New Year.
