Question
hi, for a couple of years i have been getting hip cramps when i stretch or put my legs in an awkward position. its only becoming a concern to me now because i want to try out for my schools cheer leading team. once i stretch and everything and i try to do my "stunts" my hips cramp up and i cant go further with the trick. im only 14 so i dont think it could be anything like arthritis or something serious like that. i also stretch for about 30-40 minutes before i try anything so i know that im stretching long enough. i would just like some advice to help so i can try to make the squad. well thank you for anything you can provide for me.

Answer
Hi Nichole,

An x-ray of the hip is necessary to rule out such disorders as leg-calf perthes diseas and other hip displasias.  Google it and you'll see what I mean.

To recommend anything else would be reckless at this point. Just because you are 14, doesn't mean you are immune to conditions like developmental defects. Once you get a clean bill of health with an x-ray, I will be more informed and inclined to give you recommendations.
If it is something clinically significant, early diagnosis will help prevent long term problems.
This is just being extra safe, I doubt it will turn out to be significant, in that case, cramping can be overcome with repetitive stretching and proper hydration with fluids such as Gatorade.

Get it checked out first, just in case.

Take care and have fun cheer leading!
