neuroma - recurring

Question
I have had surgery on my left foot for treatment of a neuroma 2 times since 2001.  Now it is even more painful than ever.  I cannot wear any shoes that go over my foot - or around my foot.  Luckily I live where it is warm and am wearing thong style sandals all the time and my foot is free.  I have had the injections, the medications, and then two surgeries to remove the neuroma.  Is there something more permanent?  The pain is unbearable.

Answer
Hi Amy,

It sounds like you've developed a condition  known as a stump neuroma.  This is fairly common after neuroma surgery of the foot.  The pain is often worse than the neuroma.  I would certainly say that you need to avoid any further neuroma surgery or injections.

My recommendation would be to consider Cryosurgery.  I've performed this procedure with good success.  Cryosurgery for pain associated with nerves has been around in the pain management community for nearly 20 years.  It is a safe FDA approved procedure.  It's not perfect and not a magic bullet but certainly a great option.

Hope that helps.
