Question
I have a deformed toe as does my mother and one of my children.  It is short, pointed and the nail is small and grows on an upward angle.  It has never caused me any real problems but it is a nuisance to trim the nail and is also not normal to look at.

Do you have any ideas on what it is?

Regards, Daniel

Answer
Hi Daniel,

This sounds like a genetic harmless condition that may be passed through generations. There are all kinds of toe deformities that you will see in families.  If the toenail is bothersome, you could have it permanenetly removed which is a minor office procedure.

I would not consider any other surgery on the toe unless you develop a painful condition.

I would just be proud of your unique toe!

Sincerely,
