plantar fasciitis surgery.

Question
Help!  I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis for 3 years.  I have had several orthodics, taken anti-inflammatory meds, worn night splints, had physical therapy, had coritzone injection, and wore a boot for 6 weeks.  The podiatrist I have seen has recommended plantar fasciitis release surgery.  I went for a second opinion with an orthopedic doctor.  That doctor agreed with surgery but said not to do the release surgery, rather, he recommends gastroc slide surgery.  Everything I have read about gastroc slide surgery does not indicate that it is a typical surgery for plantar fasciitis, but the recovery sounds much more appealing.  I don't know what to do and what be so appreciative of your opinion.  Thanks!

Answer
Dear Tonya
This Chicago, Bartlett & Elmhurst Podiatrist says....

For your plantar fasciitis--It is true that most plantar fasciitis is caused by a tight calf. We must make sure that that is true in your case-and that the procedure should work. A gastrocnemius release is a "bigger procedure" than a partial plantar fascia release
As far as a plantar release- Partial releases appear to work better.
If you are overweight-better to lose weight, than have a surgery.
Find out the true mechanical/medical reason that causes your plantar fasciitis, and maybe go see another Board Certified Podiatrist for a third opinion.
Hope this helps!
Good Luck My Friend!
