Question
Hi, I know this is trivial and may be part of aging you can't change (I'm 56) but I would LOVE to know if something can be done.  Recently my toes are getting a bit crooked, mainly the three middle ones on each foot.  Toe #2 on each foot (next to the big toe) is getting like a humped shape (raised in the middle) and instead of aiming straight forward, has started aiming away from the big toe.  Then toes #3 and 4 on both feet are getting smaller "humps" and they are moving from straight to aiming a little bit the opposite way, towards toe #2 (not bent near as bad as both toes #2, though).  None of this hurts or causes problems with movement or anything, and I can physically manipulate them with my hands to straighten them out fine, but I'm concerned because this is now their "normal" relaxed position.  It looks kind of ugly and also I wonder if in the future it could get worse and cause pain or difficulty walking or wearing shoes or anything.  (I do NOT wear tight shoes, especially pointed toes which I have always thought were idiotic.)  What is the reason for this humping and bending, and is there any way of straightening them back out?  I've heard of "Yoga Toes" and other products which I think are supposed to strengthen the toes for yoga, but seems like then you'd just end up with strong, crooked toes!! :-)  Sorry, I know this is very minor compared to other problems --

Answer
Hi Susan,

It sounds like you have hammertoes.  This is caused by the tendons over pulling and allowing the toes to move from their straight position.  I would not recommend surgery if there is no pain. Cosmetic appearance is not a good reason for treatment.  However, you can do sustained stretches of the tendons by pulling your toe gently into a straight position and holding for 45 seconds.  Release and repeat 10 times.  Wear sensible shoes.  If they worsen see a podiatrist.
