Question
Dear Dr.Schneider

I broke my ankle in 4 places and also all of cartilage. I had a surgery (10 pins and 2 strings or something like this). After 8 weeks my doctor told me to move my leg and walk without crutches. But walking is agony and I feel one of internal pins is tearing my skin and coming out. My doctor write me prescription for physical therapist for 20 sessions but I am really frightened that I want to skip them.  Would you please tell me is it normal to have such unbearable pain?
Thank you in advance.

Answer
Sorry to hear about your ordeal. It sounds like you would be in a great deal of pain after such a surgery and after being non-weightbearing for a length of time.  Physical therapy is the right way to go.  Your therapist should be able to determine if you're in the appropriate amount of pain and can refer you appropriately.  After an injury like this, not pursuing PT would be problematic

All the best,
Andrew Schneider, DPM
