Question
I am 52. I have always had weak ankles, although I thought I had strengthened them with exercise, and, apart from a torn ligament about ten years ago on my right knee, no knee problems
I used to jog regularly, stretch and do squats and knee curls, but, in spite of this, I heard a crunching sound in my LEFT knee a few weeks ago while running. It was sore for weeks but is just now feeling better.
BTW I switched to low impact stationary biking after this.
Now my RIGHT knee is acting up. There is no pain, but a couple times it has 'given out' when I put weight on it such as stepping down. This is also the knee that I injured before.
Today I was kicking a soccer ball around and my right ankle turned causing me to fall.Shortly after my right knee gave out big time with a visible lateral flex and a crunching sound. Right now I dont have lots of pain but from past experiance tomorrow or the next day I will be hobbling.
I will be seeing my doctor in two weeks -the only time I can get an appointment- but until then am hoping you can give me your thoughts.
I should have also mentioned that as a long haul driver I sit for long periods with my knees bent and my right foot on the pedal. My back however is great so far, knock on wood.
My two main concerns are
1. A workplace injury stepping out of my truck
2. Not being able to run after my grandkids.
Thanks so much.

Answer
Be extra careful climbing into and out of your truck's cab.  Ice when you have a chance.  Get OTC knee and ankle braces.  You really need to see your doctor, who will take x-rays and get and MRI to assess what's happening.

All the best,
