Question
When a person has Rheumatoid Arthritis and is taking a large amount of imuran would it be a danger to consider having a bariatric bypass surgery?

Answer
Darlene,

This is a tough question. I look at a lot of the research on Imuran. There are no warnings on any of the government sights I looked at that said not to have surgery while on Imuran but it is stated that you should tell you surgeon that you are taking it before you have surgery.

Imuran is an immunosuppressant medication and can reduce the amount of white blood cells. This could put you at a higher risk of infection. If you are going to have this surgery it would be advisable to talk to your surgeon in advance about whether or not to stop the medication for a period of time before the surgery or if the surgeon has other suggestions.

I wish you good health
