Question
Dear Rusty,

I have SLE and can't seem to find anything to help the rash on my cheeks and nose. I where sun block but it doesn't seem to prevent the rash.I can't take Plaquenile or Arava. While I was taking these medications, the rash seemed to clear up. But now I am not on these drugs because of some complications I was having.  And the rash is back and worse than ever! Can you recommend anything? Do you know anything about FreeDerm HC cream and Lupus?

Answer
Angela,

I am so sorry to hear about your conditon. It is terrible to have lupus by it self it is much worse if you cannot take the medications that help.

I am familiar with FreeDerm HC. Many use it for eczema and some with success. It contains hydrocortisone, which has been shown in test to help with the rash associated with SLE. I do not think that it is any better than lower priced products with that include 1% hydrocortisone.

There has been a major study comparing creams for the use of rashes associated with Lupus. While creams with hydrocortisone helped. Creams with Fluocinonide worked better than hydrocortisone and Hydroxychloroquine and Acitretin worked as well as hydrocortisone.

I wish you much improved health.
