Question
I am 34 weeks pregnant and I have Perthes. We have discussed this issue with my doctor from the beginning of my pregnancy and he didn't seem too concerned at first. Now, he's more concerned and said that he would leave the option up to us (whether to have a C section or vaginal birth), but he said that a C section is safer for the baby. My husband and I also think that it's probably safer for me too considering my condition. But, I've been a bit nervous. Would you highly recommend getting a C section vs. a vaginal birth due to my Perthes?

Thank you,
Jamee

Answer
Hi Jamee

I had two sons, one was a vaginal birth and the other was a C section.  The C section for me, in the way of stress, and easier on my body despite the surgery.  During the vaginal birth, I was terrified that I would be put in a position that would not be good for my hips and I would dislocate.  My OB did know about my hip surgery and probably the idea was a little irrational of my part, but despite all that, I was still scared.

Although the C section in general, is harder on the body, you don't have to worry about the tonality of your muscles becuase you have a spinal.

It's really up to you, which way you go, but my general reaction is that if your muscles are not in good shape due to your disease, go for the C section.

Hope this helps  and my best wishes to you and your husband.

Sharon
