Question
Hi,
Could you please tell me what the typical recovery time is for removal of hardware from a high tibial osteotomy?  I am 32 years old and have 3 screws, a plate and two pins.  I read on the internet that you have to protect the knee for at least 3 months after removal of the hardware because there are holes in the bone where the screws were.  I was wondering if that is true?  Or is the recovery more of a matter of allowing the incision to heal and regaining ROM and strength?  Thanks.

Answer
Thanks for the question. I feel personally that its more allowing the incision to heal and getting the ROM as you indicated.
Once the hardware is removed the bone should be rather solid. I can understand though not placing a tremendous amount of stress on the knees initially like running, jumping etc..... but that should be the standard protocol.

Your orthopedist should be able to give you a good time frame to work from as all of them may have their opinions on what will work with each patient. Being that they did the surgery and worked inside the wound they will have an excellent idea of the tissue quality and bone stock in the area.
that a tough surgery that you went through and not done as much as it was years ago.
You should get some Physical Therapy after the removal of the hardware and the therapist will get explicit orders on your neighboring etc... and getting strength back as you indicated earlier will be important. That should come back fast.

Good Luck
