Question
Ever since my first baby was born (2 months ago), I've had terrible foot pain.  Until recently, they only hurt when I was standing or walking but now they hurt most of the time.  Sometimes the pain involves my knees and ankles although not my legs.  I had really bad swelling of my ankles and feet during the pregnancy but it went away right after delivery.  It is getting worse and when I have talked to my doctor about it, she says it's "normal" and won't refer me to a specialist.  I hope you can help.  Thank you.

Answer
Debbie,

Pain is never normal.  There is a reason that you have pain.
Typically after pregnancy, pain will be caused by the edema which puts pressures on the structures of the feet and nerves.  Even after the edema leaves there may be pain.
But, the likely cause is a hormone known as Relaxin which is produced in pregnancy to relax the pelvis for childbirth.
This hormone affects the ligaments of the foot and will cause the foot to flatten and become less stable. With an unstable foot you develop pain because the structure is weak and this can send instability upward to the ankle and knee.
See a Podiatrist and see if you could benefit from a pair of orthotics(arch supports).
Your physician should certainly give you a referral.  This is a documented condition.

Good Luck and I hope all goes well.
