running & foot spasms

Question
I have been trying to get back into running after a long break. I am prone to plantar fasciitis so I've been trying to stretch properly & ice my feet. I'm also not going long distances AT ALL (under 1 mile so far) because I really want to keep the PF at bay.
Today after a run, after I had stretched & taken a hot shower, I got the worst spasm in my foot. It completely seized up. The only way I can describe it, is like a charley horse, but only in my foot. This also happened last week, in the other foot. It's extremely painful.

I want to think it's related to PF as its the same muscle groups, but my PF hasn't really been bothering me. This seems like a separate, but different, issue (PF isn't associated with spasms?) It bothers me because I have been trying to be so careful, and today after stretching I felt pretty good- like my muscles weren't tense or anything. I've never experienced this before.

What could be the cause of this?

Answer
This Chicago & Elmhurst Podiatrist says.......

You may be aggravating the plantar fasciitis. You may also be losing electrolytes between the run and the shower-A little Gatorade-straight or dilute will help.Continue to stretch -including your calves. Tight calves are the culprits in most plantar fasciitis problems. It could also be just an isolated incident as you are restarting your training. Check your shoes also and see if the inserts in the shoes are supportive. You can go to our website store at AnkleNFoot.com for examples of arch supports.
Hope this helps!
Good Luck !
