Question
Hello doctor. My name is Kevin and I am not sure how to deal with my foot. I am a high school track runner and I need my feet to be pain free. On last Thursday I was at a track meet when I hurt my foot. I was jumping over the hurdles when I landed on my foot the wrong way. I jumped on my toes in to the track bit when my heel was about to land, my foot twisted. I landed with my toes on the track but my heel on its side. At the time it hurt but I thought that the pain would subside, so I continued to run. When I went home my foot hurt really bad and I went to sleep, thinking I would wake up and it would feel better. When I woke up my foot was swollen. I've tried icing and not walking on it, unless needed, but it still hurts. Now I have a bump on the top of my foot after an entire week. Can you please help me because I have another track meet in five days.

Answer
This Chicago & Elmhurst Podiatrist says.......

Dear Kevin
If your injury does not respond to PRICE within 48 hours-or produces a lot of pain-then go have  x-rays to rule out a fracture.
Yes, you can have a foot fracture and still walk on it without knowing it!
PRICE
Protect-perhaps an ace wrap around the area of pain and limit the movements that aggravate it-Find a gym shoe that seems to decrease the pain on top of the foot
Rest-Speaks for itself.
Ice- As much as you can tolerate. Pros put the injured area into an ice bath for 15 minutes! Try ice packs instead.
Compress-Ace wrap or foot sleeve around the foot
Elevate-Will help if it throbs at the end of the day.

Go to our website store at AnkleNFoot.com for examples of wraps, sleeves or braces for your foot/ankle
Take max doses of anti-inflammatories for about 2-3 days-as long as you don't have any stomach problems.
If these suggestions don't help within 2-3 days then seek the aid of Podiatrists who are Board Certified in Orthopedics. Sometimes these injuries respond with orthotics and physical therapy or other modalities. X-rays may be necessary for the diagnosis.

Hope This Helps
Good Luck!
