Question
Dr.
I've had this stinging sensation in my feet for at least 10 years.  The pain seems to worsen when I sit or lay down.  I've been seeing a pain managemen doctor of a few months and decided that was not the best option for me and not that I have stopped the pain meds the stinging seems to be worse.

I do not have any history of back, neck or nerve problems.  Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

Rusty

Answer
Hi Rusty,

This sounds like a condition known as neuropathy.  But there could also be other conditions that need to be investigated by a Physician.

Have you seen an Internist for a regular physical or exam?

Burning in the feet may be due to various medical conditions.  The more common include Diabetes, excessive alcohol usage, chemotherapy and autoimmune diseases.  Some people may have this condition known as neuropathy and never find an origin.

I would recommend having a general medical workup and also consider seeing a Neurologist.  They can often find the source.  If they have no answers, then I would see a Podiatrist for a foot exam.  There is a nerve entrapment condition known as Tarsal tunnel syndrome which can also produce these symptoms.

I agree that pain management is not the answer.

So good luck and see these Drs.  If you have further questions once you start the process, let me know.
