tarsal tunnel syndrome

Question
I was told by my doctor that I have tarsal tunnel syndrome.  He said to rest my foot and ankle for the next 10 days and to take prednisone for the next 7 days and come back to see him.  I am on my feet about 8 hours a day with work.  What is the best way to rest my foot and ankle when I'm on my feet that much? Do you have any other suggestions, because the pain and tingling are driving me crazy?

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

If you do have tarsal tunnel, an important part of resting the foot would be accomplished by using custom orthotics or possibly starting with a boot that will immobilize your foot, ankle and leg. Ice and compression are often helpful. And physical therapy may be needed.

To confirm the diagnosis you may want to consider a nerve conduction study but ultimately controlling the foot and ankle is key.

In some cases surgery may be required but I would do everything possible to avoid surgery.

Sincerely,
