Question
Several times now I have had a severe muscle or tendon? cramp on the top of my left foot, more to left side from mid-foot to above the ankle.  It becomes very painful and hard as a rock.  I have to get up to walk it off.  I've had foot cramps before, but not on that particular muscle.  Or maybe it's a tendon?? When I look at diagrams of foot muscles/tendons, it feels like it should be the "peroneus tertius" but I sure am not the expert!  My toes and underside of my foot does not feel involved - no cramping there or anything.

Answer
Dear Olivia,
This Chicago Podiatrist, Elmhurst Podiatrist & West Loop Podiatrist says.......
For your foot spasms.....
It may be related to the joints in the area, or the extensor digitorun brevis muscle.
Most probable strain & or some irritation of the joints in that area. If you are overweight, stand a lot, take hypertension meds-then these can be possible causes.
If you take HTN meds, then make sure you have calcium & potassium in your diet-and that you drink plenty of water.
Start with a supportive shoe during the day, possibly orthotics by your podiatrist, and do stretches and range of motion in the ankle & midfoot area where the cramps are in the AM & PM.
Check out our website AnklenFootCenters.com for possible temporary supports/orthotics.
Good Luck!
