Question
Hi, I just had nerve transposition surgery (7/28) and am currently recovering. My Dr mentioned physical therapy after I have my stitches removed. I'm wondering what it will entail. Oh, and should I be typing?

Answer
Hi,

Therapy usually consists of therapeutic exercises to slowly regain your flexibility, strength and function.  There will likely be some manual therapy, where the therapist works with stretching the tight muscles and massaging the incision area (after it has healed a bit) to make sure everything lays down smoothly and doesn't keep you from moving normally.  They can also do "modalities":  things like deep heat ultrasound, fluidotherapy (which, oddly enough, has nothing to do with "fluid" but is actually a very warm and comfortable dry massage in a box), heat or cold packs, electrical stimulation for pain relief, etc.  They will teach you a home program and that is the most important part.

As for typing...it depends on what your physician said.  Some say it's okay to use the fingers, others really want you to let the area rest.  I'd suggest calling the nurse tomorrow and asking specifically.

Take care,

Jenny
